Design brief
The museum is conceived as a cultural and social landmark—an open, interactive environment that engages the local community while presenting the life and work of Marios Tokas on both a national and international stage.
The architectural approach restores the spatial memory of the old village core. The perimeter footprint of the former buildings is reinterpreted as a stone boundary wall, built in traditional hill masonry, reinforcing the continuous fabric characteristic of Cypriot settlements. Within this enclosure, the museum forms a dynamic relationship with the wall—touching it, pulling away to create internal gardens, or rising above it.
Visitors enter from the south edge of the square into a sequence of planted courtyards that structure the approach. The ground floor is organized into two volumes: the main one with reception, shop, temporary exhibition and services, and a separate café with independent access.
The first floor hosts the permanent exhibition as a circular route with framed views toward key landmarks of Ypsonas. A recessed second floor accommodates offices and the library.
Bioclimatic strategies rely on natural ventilation, the atrium, and planted courtyards, while the landscape uses low‑maintenance species that support the microclimate. The structure is reinforced concrete, designed for efficiency and long‑term adaptability.
